GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Washington Commanders are facing a potential major setback after veteran running back Austin Ekeler reportedly suffered a right Achilles injury in the fourth quarter of Thursday night’s 27-18 loss to the Green Bay Packers, according to sources cited by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Ekeler, 30, is scheduled to undergo further imaging tests on Friday to confirm the severity of the injury. Washington head coach Dan Quinn acknowledged the potential impact of losing Ekeler for the season, stating, “That will be significant. He provides a lot of unique things for us.”
The injury occurred with 5:50 remaining in the game. Ekeler, running a route on third-and-10, attempted to cut but fell to the ground and was assisted to the sideline by athletic trainers. He was later ruled out and left the stadium on crutches, wearing a walking boot on his right foot.
“He’s one of the great leaders on this team,” said rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt. “I learn a lot from him, so it’s definitely tough.”
Ekeler, who finished the game with eight carries for 17 yards and two receptions for 7 yards, served as Washington’s top running back and primary third-down back. In the previous season, over 12 games, he totaled 367 rushing yards and 366 receiving yards, making him a key offensive player for the Commanders.
This potential loss raises concerns about Washington’s offensive depth as they continue their NFL 2025 season, with Ekeler being a critical component of their running game and leadership on the field.
